First there was SkyTracker 5.  Then came StormTarget 5, and now Storm 5 NexRad is the Storm 5 Weather Center's state-of-the-art storm tracking system.

Storm 5 NexRad (previously StormTarget 5) now has the power of StormTarget 5, plus a wider range of radar visibility.  The information below was taken from the NewsChannel5 website:

Some Radar Facts:
NewsChannel 5's Network's Weather Radar data is now supplied
by the National Weather Service WSR-88D NexRad system
composed of a network of about 160 individual Radars. Each of the
National Weather Service Radars has a power output of 750 kW in
the S band. Each system uses a 28 ft. diameter parabolic dish
antenna with a beam width of 0.88 - 0.96 degrees. This is the most
powerful and sensitive Weather Radar equipment in common use in
                     the United States today.

Individual Radar outputs from the NWS network are digitized and
combined to form a mosaic grid covering the entire USA. As a
result of the mosaic nature of the Radar data, the Storm 5 Weather
Radar display will no longer be limited to the "sweep" radius of 75
to 150 miles of a single radar site. Many Radars with overlapping
                     sweeps now generate the display.

The nature of NexRad Radar is that the antenna uses a very slow
azimuth rotation, because it also scans in the elevation mode at the
same time. This mode of operation allows collection of many forms
of data such as cloud height, precipation level, and wind direction
information. A complete sweep of the antenna occurs about once
every five minutes, which limits the refresh rate of our product to that
                     time.

In addition to the use of the National Weather service Radar
network, NewsChannel 5 Network also operates our own local
                     "live" doppler Radar system.

The NewsChannel 5 Network continues to have the newest, fastest and most powerful weather tracking system on the planet. Storm 5 NexRad uses the latest digital 3D technology that pinpoints severe weather right down to your street. It uses information from National Weather Service radar systems for optimized detection of flood producing rain, large hail and dangerous winds.

Some Storm 5 NexRad features:
* Zoom in to a specific street
*3D look through all levels of the atmosphere
*Uses information from five different radar systems
*Real-time storm tracking
*Improved online radar images and radar loops
*Fastest and most accurate system available
